Serena Williams vs Justin Henin Live at the Australian Open 2010 Finals

This is it. Today marks the big day for both Serena Williams and Justin Henin as they face each other in a few hours in the Australian Open 2010 Ladies Singles Finals.

Watch the Serena Williams vs Justin Henin finals game live in various streaming websites in the internet. You can catch a live scoring at the Australian Open 2010 official website.

Serena Williams will be out to defend her title today and break the pattern of winning at the Australian Open only in odd numbered years.

Justin Henin will continue to live the dream. After 20 months of hiatus in the professional arena, she comes back to Australian Open as a wild card entry, and sweating her way to the finals to finally meet world's number one today. She has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

This should be exciting to all tennis fans! I'm for the underdog, Justin Henin!

Jobs Available at the Australian Open

Are you curious about how to become a ball boy in the Australian Open? It is a most coveted job for every tennis fanatic. It will be an exciting two-week work that will hardly feel like a job at all as you will be overwhelmed by all the famous faces of tennis you usually just see on TV. Many tennis fans will fight to fill in the position of a ball boy and get a chance to feed balls during the games of their favorite players.

There are many jobs available at the Australian Open, one of which is a ball boy. To qualify for one, they will do a series of battery tests to gauge your eye-hand coordination. Also, sad to say that there is an age limit. If you will notice, those ball boys now at the Australian Open are around from twelve to fifteen years old only. But there are many other jobs available at the Australian Open. And here, I found this list:

• Ballkid Operations Team
• Court Services and Court Operations
• Courtesy Car Drivers
• Corporate and VIP Hospitality
• e-Communications Volunteers
• Grassroots Promotions Volunteers
• Information Services Staff
• Media Staff
• Merchandise/Retail Staff
• Office Administration
• Operations Staff
• Player Medical
• Site & Safety Staff
• Statisticians
• TV Liaison

Of course, it's too late now to be hired for this year's Australian Open, But for next year at the Australian Open 2011, you can start sending in your applications! You better hurry because they will only be accepting applications until the end of March 2010. And should you get accepted, there still other things to prepare, like your working visa for example, if you are not a resident of Australia.

Meanwhile, exciting games are ongoing at the Australian Open 2010. Watch it LIVE on your TV screens!

Maria Sharapova Returns in Top Form at the Australian Open 2010

It was not easy for Maria Sharapova to sit in the sidelines of last year’s Australian Open to nurse a shoulder injury. After all, she was the defending champion. But for Sharapova, there is no rush to glory. And now the waiting game is over as she comes back in top form to win another grand slam here in the Australian Open 2010.

She gets her confidence from winning the title two years ago. But she will be in for some tough games this year as many old favorites are also returning. There’s Kim Clijsters and Justin Henin for starters.

There’s just three days left before Australian Open 2010 starts! Maria Sharapova returns with a big bang, and she’s ready to face the battle. Don’t forget to watch Australian Open 2010 live on your television and root for your favorite players!

Watch Australian Open 2010 Live!

There's just ten days left for all tennis fans to count before they can get to watch Australian Open 2010 live on their favorite sports channels! I, for one, am all giddy about it. After new year, the next best thing I always look forward to is the Australian Open, the first in a series of grand slams every year.

There are a couple of interesting things to look forward to in this year's Australian Open:

1) Maria Sharapova is out to play again after her shoulder injury pushed her to the sidelines last year.

2) Justin Henin is also back from her retirement! She seems to be in perfect shape and raring to display her strong backhand again. The world awaits if she can equal Kim Clijsters' very successful comeback. She holds 7 grand slam titles so far. Will her wildcard entry to this year's Australian Open give her her 8th title?

3) Defending champion and controversial Serena Williams is not banned from joining this year's AS Open after all. Last year she figured into a verbal dispute with a lineswoman in an uptight match against Clijsters in the US Open.

4) Many spectators are setting their eyes on Jelena Dokic who wowed the crowd last year with her exemplary display of tennis skills on court. She'll be one of the toughest lady contenders in this year's AS Open.

5) Of course, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are contemporary classics. Grand slams will not be complete without them. The fight for number one continues for them in just a few days!

We are all rooting for our favorite players. I sure will be glued on my TV as the first grand slam commences in a few days time. Don't pass up this chance to watch the Australian Open 2010 live! Game on!

Men's Health Urbanathlon 2009 and Race Results

The Men's Health Urbanathlon 2009 was held in McKinley Hills last November 22, 2009. I had anxiety attacks the past two weeks while waiting for this day, but I'm so glad it's finally over. The anxiety attacks were for nothing because it turned out that this is by far the most exciting race event I've ever experienced. Unlike the usual races, Urbanathlon 2009 has obstacles that participants must overcome to finish either 5K or 10K distances. I joined the 5K category only because I was intimidated at the obstacles. But it turned out the race was easier than how it was advertised.

For this year, the Urbanathlon 2009 had 5 obstacles. First off was the 30 pieces hurdles cum MMDA orange barricades we see on the road. But what they didn't tell us was that these 30 pieces would be arranged in 4 rows of 5 hurdles per row. Therefore, I only had to overcome 4 hurdles to pass through. Whew! And all the while I thought my stamina will be challenged by jumping over 30 hurdles.

The second obstacle was the 20ft weaver. It is a triangular setup with parallel steel bars. The racers must weave themselves in and out of the bars alternately up to the tip of the triangle then weave their way down to the base on the other side. It sounds quite difficult but the race marshalls were very lenient especially to us ladies :)

The third barrier was the 16-floor stairs. We went inside a building and ran 8 floors up then 8 floors down. This was kinda easy since participants were clogged in a narrow stairway such that I could hardly get my momentum.

The fourth barrier was the 20ft by 20ft low crawl. This was cool! It really felt like commando in action for a while there. I had to go down on fours and crawl to the other end of the barrier. Race marshalls were reminding us to stay low and wait til we reach the end before we raise our heads and stand up. Otherwise, we might get injured if we get stuck in the wires (which were really just straws for our sake). It was the only obstacle that dirtied the participants. It rained the night before and the grass was moist.

The fifth barrier was what feared me the most -- the 8ft wall barrier. My bf and some race marshalls helped me or I wouldn't be able to climb to the other side. It wasn't that difficult really but my initial fears caused my knees to shake a bit. I had to compose myself so I could steady my legs, lift myself up finally and make it to the other side.

Kudos to Coach Rio and Finish Line for a well-organized race. The P450 registration fee was so worth it. We were given Kenny's Roast sandwich for breakfast and a finisher's shirt after the race. It rained with other freebies also from sponsors. We'll definitely join 10K next time in Men's Health Urbanathlon 2010!

Results are in! You can view results HERE.

Adidas KOTR 2009 Race, Official Results and Boo-boos!

Adidas KOTR (King of the Road) 2009 will go down in history as the worst running event ever held in the Philippines! From pre-race, to race day, to post-race, it was filled with many boo-boos that runners could hardly ignore. I paid Php500 not just to get a very cool singlet, but to have a wonderful running experience. But as it sadly turned out, Adidas KOTR 2009 became one big flop. They hired Mr. Rudy Biscocho to organize the race. Rudy is well known in the running scene for always coming up with well-organized races all the time. But whatever happened to Adidas KOTR 2009? They can't give us the excuse that they've taken in more running events than they could handle. We all paid to experience a very memorable running event, and they are responsible to make this happen at all costs.

I speak for myself while knowing that most other participants echo my disappointments and complaints. We were eager to join Adidas KOTR and registered on the very first day (Sep 21, 2009). We waited excitedly for about three weeks to get the race packets. My boyfriend went to SM Megamall early to claim our race packets only to find himself in the middle of a very long queue. He had to wait for two hours (that's 120 minutes!) before he had his turn. That's more than the time it takes for us to finish our 10K runs. We were lucky that they found our race packets easily. Some suffered a worse fate. After falling in line for more than an hour, they were told that their race packets were missing or were not yet available.

Come the race day on Oct 25, 2009, Adidas KOTR still were consistent in their boo-boos. I was dismayed with the water stations. The runners had to huddle at the booths to get a cup of water. I was very particular on beating my personal record and so opted to keep running instead of hustling my way inside just to get a cup. In the other races I participated on, I would see marshals lined in the race path while extending cups to the runners, such that a runner is not disrupted of his momentum as he reaches for a cup while running.

The finish line greeted me with another queue because the race marshal was having a difficult time peeling off the barcodes from our race bibs. I knew then that it would affect the official results. There were more queues in claiming the finisher certificates and complimentary Gatorade drinks.

The week after the race was an agony of waiting for the official results to come out. Around 9 days after, Adidas finally released the results in their Facebook page. But their page instantly rained more complaints as they only disclosed the top 50 runners from the 5K and 10K distances while revealing the complete list of the 21K event. I had a bad feeling that they botched up the results and so decided not to release it.

But the participants would not stop ranting, and so maybe out of pressure, Adidas finally released the full list 2 days after, albeit filled with inaccuracies as I correctly surmised. Their Facebook page is further bombarded with complaints which Adidas was quick to delete to save face. However, deleting comments they don't like doesn't delete the frustration from their participants who paid them to have a good time.

My official result was 1hr 1 min. I should be happy with it, only that I know it's not right. I finished 10K in 1hr 2min instead. I have friends who complained they finished faster than the official times posted. My boyfriend was not in the list at all!! And to think he was one of the early registrants!

Perhaps, we are reaching our boiling points because Adidas is keeping their mum. I expect them to issue an official statement of apology although I doubt it will pacify the runners. It will not change the things that already happened but it is naturally expected from them. If they respect the runners enough who paid their hard-earned money to join this race, then Adidas should at least issue a formal statement to explain their side.

But then I think... Adidas KOTR 2009 garnered 7,000 participants. Multiply that by Php500. What do you get? We are talking about Php3.5M!! And so I think if they are keeping mum about all this, and refuse to apologize, maybe it's because they have already pocketed this much money, and don't care about what the rest of us rant about. And so what does it make Adidas look like??? =)

I'm so glad I wore this bib at my back during the race =) :

Adidas King of the Road 2009

Participating in last Sunday's Adidas King of the Road race was my second time to run a distance of 10km. My unofficial time is 1hr 2min 20sec based on the big clock flashed at the finish line. However, I was stalled at the finish line because the runners were forced to slow down as the barcodes were being peeled off our race bibs. It doesn't matter for as long as I know I beat my own record by 2 minutes.

Much thanks to the organizers of the Adidas KOTR! I know they've been bombarded with complaints. Many participants had to line up for more than an hour just to get their race packets. Others had the misfortune of having to wait until the last minute to get their singlets. Some even received the wrong sizes. But for what it's worth, Adidas was humble enough to admit their misgivings, and they tried to make amends the best they could. Adidas has been holding their King of the Road races for many years now, so I'm certain this year's glitch is a lesson learned for them. I will still join next year and hope that the Adidas KOTR 2010 will more than make up for what happened this year.

The singlet is really something to rave about. I so love it! Bonifacio High Street, where the race was held, seemed like a sea of yellow as thousands of runners donned their bright yellow singlets. For a while there, it looked like a Noynoy Aquino for President movement!

My friends and I enjoyed thinking of what to put on our blank bibs. Here's what we wrote:
You can click on the image to enlarge.

My sister decided to advertise her cartoon website. That's literally a running advertisement, LOL!  That's my bib in the middle pic, and my friend's on the third pic. :D

I was able to take a pic of Gilbert Remulla who ran 21km:

Other celebrities I saw (but wasn't able to take a pic) were BB Gandanghari (he looked every bit a male without makeup but with flawless skin!), Rovilson Fernandez, and Coach Rio (LOL, he's quite a celeb already). I heard Christine Jacob-Sandejas also joined Adidas KOTR, but I didn't see her.

Breakfast buffet followed at Something Fishy in Eastwood!

Special shoutout to my GT online running buddies! Hope to really meet you soon. :)

Olympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro!

The votes have been counted! And Rio de Janeiro wins it as the next home of the Olympics 2016! Paulo Coelho earlier plurked that he's going to Copenhagen to join the Brazilian Delegation. He must be so happy right now. I've only first heard about Rio de Janeiro while playing the computer game Where in The World is Carmen Sandiego, LOL. Can you guess my age? But of course the city is worth more than that. Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil. The Brazilians have good reasons to be proud as they become the first South Americans to host the prestigious Olympics games! Meanwhile, let's all gear up for Olympics 2012 in London. :)

Juan Martin Del Potro is THE MAN! (US Open 2009 Men's Singles Champion)

Juan Martin Del Potro is the man!!! He is now USD 1.6M richer as he clinched the trophy of the US Open Men's Finals this morning. It was simply amazing! I was awoken at 5AM to catch it on live streaming in the internet but sleep got the better of me. I'm so thankful that a replay of this historic match came an hour after the live telecast and so I was able to watch it wide-eyed this time (LOL).

Interestingly, Roger Federer has been dominating the first two sets. On the live chat box beside the live streaming window, viewers were commenting at how great Roger Federer was. At the same time, they were jeering Juan Martin Del Potro, while predicting on how Federer will win the game. Some said that Federer will pounce on Del Potro on the last and deciding set with a 6-0 score. Others predicted that Del Potro will succumb to fatigue and retire. These guys belittled the spirit and talent of the twenty year old lad from Argentina. And he proved them all wrong in the end.

Del Potro was clearly the underdog as he stepped for the first time in the stadium for a finals match with no less than the number one seed to contend with. He was trying to snitch away from Federer a sixth title from the US Open tournament. It seemed a very hard battle to conquer, if not impossible. His inexperience for such great pressure was sure to get on his nerves and affect his composure in the game. And this was exactly what happened in the first set. But Del Potro proved to be made of tougher fibers. Slowly but surely, he was able to force Federer to play a fifth and deciding set, to Federer's disbelief.

And thus happened what many of us thought Del Potro could not do -- He made history by causing one of the greatest upsets in tennis by downing Federer in the fifth set at 6-2, and finally clinching the title! Awesome game!!! Hats off to Federer for that tremendous display of never-say-die rallies he exchanged with Del Potro. He remains one of the best players in tennis history with 15 grand slams so far under his belt. But today, in the US Open 2009, the spotlight is on Del Potro! I look forward to seeing him in his best form in the future grand slams!

Kim Clijsters is Back! (US Open 2009)

Just the fact that she beat Venus Williams in the 4th round in her comeback in the US Open 2009 is enough to make me and the rest of her fans happy! Venus Williams is still Venus Williams. After her two and a half years of hiatus, it's very pleasant to see Kim Clijsters still holding on to her form, with big serves and ground strokes. And ousting Venus in the 3rd round is definitely a good way to mark a comeback.

I suddenly miss Justin Henin, and those days when she and Clijsters were topping their ranks. There are a lot of fresh faces in the US Open this year displaying their mettle in court. They are definitely younger and less experienced yet outclassing some of the more formidable players like Sharapova, Safina and Zvonareva. Somehow, Clijster's victories so far become sweeter as she proves to them that she has not lost her touch in tennis. Clijsters meeting Serena Williams in the finals is not unlikely. But no matter how far she goes, she has already made a statement early on. She's back! Clijsters is back! Hope she stays around for a while longer.

Globe Run for Home on July 19!

I will run again on July 19! It will be for Globe's Run For Home charity event. Proceeds will help fund the ongoing project of Habitat for Humanity in building homes in Calauan, Laguna. Besides my love for running, I'm excited about the disposable electronic chip that will be first used here. It allows participants to track their own times more accurately from start to finish.

I have been joining running events for more than a year now. Many runners like me get fulfillment from beating their personal records which is why getting an accurate time is so important to them. And this is also why I am eager to try using this innovative chip. Based on my past experience, participants would complain about discrepancies from their own watch as against the official race results. A time difference of a few minutes is a big deal. Such discrepancies are sometimes due to human error at the finish line.

The outpour of finishers causes a hold up or bottle neck as a race representative peels off stubs from the race bibs one by one. These are placed on top of one another in order of who came in first. At the same time, there is another representative whose sole duty is to jot down the clock times. With the use of the chip, I hope I will not see this rudiment scene anymore.

Globe Run for Home will be held in The Fort and offers four categories in 3km, 5km, 10km and 21km. I will try to beat my own time in 5km again. My last official race was last March in Botak's Paa-bilisan held in UP. I finished in 32 minutes. Hopefully, I can make it in 30 minutes flat this time.

Meanwhile, I'm also trying to level up to 10km. As a stepping stone, I registered first for Botak's Paa-tibayan on August under the 5 mile (8km) category.

Wish me luck! I love to run, and it's nice to be back again after a while. So see you all in Globe Run for Home! July 19 people!

It's Federer's Time!

Rafael Nadal lost his hold early on in this year's French Open. It was disheartening to see him walk off the court after RobinSoderling beat him in four tight sets in the third round of eliminations. I have been looking forward to this grand slam since the start of the year, wishing that Nadal will surpass Bjorn Borg's record of four consecutive wins. But Soderling had another thing going on in his mind. Whatever it was, he surely caused one of the greatest upsets that he will forever remember in his tennis career.

With Nadal gone (along with the other top bets like Novac Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Jo-wilfried Tsonga), Roger Federer's chances of finally clinching a Roland Garros trophy is not far behind. I have always admired his composure in court. He's not one to crack under pressure. He came from two sets down in his fourth round game against Haas and then took the last three sets to win. This is precisely what will lead him to the finals. And I really hope he does. Because next to Nadal, I want no one else to win this year but Federer. The Roland Garros Cup will fill in the hole in his long string of grand slam titles. It is the only one he has not won yet.

He may not be hailed as the King of Clay, but he can sure prove to everyone that he is one of the greatest legends in tennis history, and that he can conquer any ground. Is clay his next turf? I surely hope so. I think it's Federer's time this year! *cross fingers*

Racing With Time

I joined my second race last Sunday. It wasn’t a bad run, but I timed two minutes longer than my first run last March. I can’t exactly explain how this happened when I was sure I could beat my own time. Ok, make that half-sure. My friend, who ran the race with me, said she felt that the course we took was more than 5 kilometers (our entry level in the race). Does that rationalize for the two minutes? I don’t want excuses like that to cover up for my failure.

My friend admitted of cheating in the race. She took a shortcut when no one was watching. The shortcut saved her around three minutes. I guess we have different reasons for joining. She just wants to be a finisher. I don’t want to merely finish the race, but more importantly to improve my clock time.

It’s not as if the world ended and I’m sulking at my failure. I’m still in the top 40 percentile of the overall finishers. I overtook a lot of twenty-something girls in the race also. I could beam with pride :) But at this point, I still want to push myself to the limit, and see how far I can (still) go. If I can improve my time by 3-4 minutes, I’ll be really happy. But building up my endurance is not that easy. Lately, I realize that I am racing with Time. I’m not getting any younger and there are still a lot of things I want to experience before nature takes its own course and my knees begin to wobble.

I don’t want to sound like an oldie. I’m just thirty! I’m turning thirty-one in a couple of months. But I still want to be fit for the next twenty years of my life. So if Time wants to race with me, game on! I’m looking forward to my next race. Hopefully, I’ll do better then. :)

MVP Cup 2

MVP Cup 2 was held last July 14-16, 2006 at the Araneta Coliseum. It was another memorable event to all badminton fanatics around. Thanks to the organizers who gave away lots of free tickets, watching the MVP this year was lighter on the pocket. This event is a rare gathering of top badminton players playing not for their country, but in honor of their continent – Europe vs. Asia. This concept of MVP (which others say is reminiscent of the Ryder Cup) is really great. Aside from seeing my favorite players live in action, the off-court scenes were a pleasant sight also. Some players who usually rival each other, like Lin Dan of China and Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, were now teammates under the banner of Asia. I’ve seen Zhang Ning, the top female singles player from China, exchanging hearty laughs with Saralee, a female player of Thailand. And of course, only on this rare event have I seen the head coaches giving advice to their respective teammates of different nationalities. Filipino shuttler, Vic Asuncion, had to translate what the Chinese head coach was saying to some Malaysian and Indonesian teammates.

Team Asia was predicted to win the event by a mile but Team Europe bagged the top prize of USD 60,000 to the bewilderment of the crowd. Team Asia went home with USD 40,000. The most unexpected upset was when Yao Jie of Netherlands beat World No. 1 Zhang Ning in 3 sets. That game sealed the victory for Europe. The last match between Lin Dan and Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark became a non-bearing game.

Too bad I didn’t have a chance this time to get autographs from the players. That’s okay. I enjoyed the games more this year as there were better match-ups, as compared to some lopsided ones last year. Team Europe was underestimated but they showed absolutely terrific performances to walk away as the deserving winners. Maybe that will teach Team Asia not to be lax next year. Looking forward to MVP Cup 3!

The Five People You Meet In Badminton

Let’s admit it. One of the magnifiers of badminton is people. We are a social lot, and badminton is definitely one of the more social sports around. Next to our hitting addiction, what makes us brave the heavy rains or heated traffics, and soar through highs and lows to get to our court destination, is because of our anticipation in meeting people. Badminton becomes more exciting because we look forward to seeing and talking to our friends. We mull over the most recent political situations around and we prattle on the hottest chismis in town while our perspiration dries in waiting from the long queues. But we don’t mind. In between games are just tons and tons of stuff to talk about.

Even before a game starts, there is most likely an agreed venue already for the after-game dinner. Unmindful of having to wake up early for work the following day, we stay up late in court and proceed to have dinner with friends until the break of dawn. Some group would even hit it to the KTV bars for videoke stints.

Badminton has revolved into both a serious sport and gimmick alternative rolled into one hitting action. It has transcended from just being a physical activity for the health-conscious to becoming a clinic for mental growth as well. We meet all sorts of people in court every time we play. If Mitch Albom says we meet five people in heaven, I look around in court and I say we meet five groups of people in badminton:

The Acquaintance

Acquaintances are usually limited to hi’s and hello’s. There might be a quizzical stare in trying to dig in your subconscious where you’ve seen the familiar face before, or if there occurred previous casual introductions. Acquaintances play around the comforts of civil nods and half-smiles, and sometimes awkward silences. They elicit some discomforts during long waits in queue. One feels itchy to play again than be stuck with small and boring exchanges of one-liners. One good sign of this is the lack of eye contacts or staring at the exchange of shuttlecock hits while the other person is trying to make conversation.

The Filler

The filler is someone you remember when you lack quorum in a game, or someone who will make the court fee less expensive for the group. You get to play with him often in court but you probably don’t know how many siblings he has or where exactly he lives. The topics of conversation may be limited to badminton, and the laughters confined within the boundaries of the court. The connection is raw and undefined. The communication may fail both of you at one point and you would just wonder one day what happened to that person you used to play with.

The Buddies

Badminton buddies are actually your inner circle. When a game ends and the players break up to their homes, the buddies would stick around longer for dinner or hangout for coffee. Buddies are marked by easiness, comfort and trust to a high degree. The communication exceeds badminton, and move on to more personal matters. When asked who your badminton friends are, your buddy’s name would naturally come up in the list. Sentimental factors set in. He is missed when not seen in a long time.

The Love Interest

This person may be the reason your eyes are stuck permanently in that court next to yours. The move, the shots, the looks, the get-up, just everything about this person causes your world to stop temporarily and stare with full interest and wanting. If you’re lucky enough there just might be total connection and the love interest would eventually be your romantic partner. Badminton becomes doubly fun.

The Fiend

Of course, there will always be water and oil that just do not mix. The mere sight is irritating and downright repulsive. He may strike you as goading or his stance an ostentatious display. His presence will get you heated on a cold day. He may cause distractions to your game, or he may just push you above your playing level!

It doesn't matter who you meet in court in every game. It’s just fascinating to note that the court becomes a social arena as well where different levels of interaction exist simultaneously. The next time you get bored from waiting for your turn in queue, look around you and identify your own five people. You’ll realize that the court teems and bustles with players of varied personalities. And as they say, birds of the same feather will flock together. They make the life of badminton, and life in general, more colorful.

Iniibig ko ang badminton
Ito ang isport na aking nakaugalian
Sa court ang tambayan ng katulad kong Baddicts
Kami'y naglalaro tuwing Sabado
Upang lumakas ang smash,
maging maligaya
at magkaron ng bagong kapaluan
Kami'y nagtutulungan
upang mapabuti ang samahan
at nagsasalu-salo sa hapunan
Bilang ganti ay susundin ko

Susundin ko ang mga tuntunin
ng EB's at mga paligsahan
Tutuparin ko ang mga tungkulin
ng isang manlalarong Baddicts

Paglilingkuran ko ang aking mga ka-Baddicts
na baguhan sa badminton
at wala pang gaanong alam
Sisikapin kong maging isang tunay na Baddicts
